What is 4D ?

4D Motion Cinema is a special rising cinema form internationally. It develops on the basis of the traditional stereo and four-dimensional cinemas. Its strengths are highlighted themes, high technology and vivid images when compared with other types of cinemas. At the same time, it increases motion effects when compared with more common 4D cinemas. Although it’s just on the initial stage in China, it has developed fast in recent years, making a reference to similar projects abroad. It has already been practically put into use in We Zhou Science and Technology Museum, Amusement Park in Chencun, Luohe in He Nan Province, Neijiang in Sichuan Province as well as Inner Mongolia and the users are very satisfied with both the effect and efficiency.

Generally 4D Motion Cinema consists of 3 parts: Stereo Projection Systems, Special Effect Seats and Equipments as well as Computer-controlled Systems. The three elements work synergistically and form a system to stimulate all of the senses of the audience, such as sense of vision, hearing, touch, feel and so on, and reproduce the environment related to movie themes, the various details of the environment, and the audience's experience in a specific environment, etc, which creates a kind of immersive overall effect.

Stereo Projection System

Stereo Projection System includes stereo video and stereo projection equipment. The films with stereo effects and played in 4D Motion Cinema are often produced by adopting special effects technology of digital film. The theory of digital stereo film is as same as the stereo films which we are familiar with. However, both the production process and the effect they show to us are quite different.

Because it’s modeled and rendered in relative computer software, therefore, the produced digital film can presents us some unimaginable events ,such as volcanoes, earthquakes, undersea exploration, forest fires, Space Odyssey, prehistoric animals-dinosaurs and so on, in which it’s difficult for ordinary cameras to reach its point and shooting angle and it’s difficult and even almost impossible to make it by manual capture due to high temperature, high pressure, danger or not in the same space and other reasons.

In addition, with the development of its technology, digital film can be vivid enough in environment and roles. As all the digital films are processed, produced and adjusted by computer, so sometimes they can present more vividly than films acted by real persons and animals in terms of film production and expression.

While watching digital stereo movies, viewers are required to wear polarized 3D glasses. This is because the video image applies stereo imaging technology when produced by computer, respectively generating and outputting two sets of digital films with two different parallaxes. When the film is played, the two computers (or more than one projector)project simultaneously and the digital images coincide on the same screen, so it’s the motion images viewers whose eye sights are adjusted by polarized glasses can see. For example, there is a monster rushing up to the viewers in the picture and viewers can feel that the monster seems to be so close that it nearly throws itself upon them and then they dodge subconsciously, which causes the tension and excitement without any risk.

The digital stereo films which have been produced in China are Prehistoric Adventure, Forest Adventure, Formation of Coal, Underwater Adventure, Destruction of Pirate ship, The Formation and Evolution of Mount Eme, the first and second episode of The Third Child of Rat into the City, The Specter of Eternal Life, Earthquake, The Dinosaur Era, Escape the Space Cit, Fly Soul of Gods, At 1km Underground and so on. These films combine multiplied strengths of digital and stereo films, which present the roles vividly and the stereo effect is very remarkable. And they have already been successively introduced to 4D Cinemas around China now.

Seats and Equipments with Special Effects

As for one of the symbolic features differing from those of other ordinary cinemas, 4D motion seat is a kind of seat and equipment with special effect, which can make the three-free-degree movement come true. This is the indispensable element of 4D Motion Cinema. And just through the interaction of seat and equipment with special effects, can it achieve the feeling of "being immersive" based on stereo vision.

It’s suitable to place 30 to 120 seats in commercial areas. Seat with special effects seems to be a very comfortable chair, but there is a hidden secret, namely that with the movement of film camera, it can simultaneously move upward and downward, pitch forward and backward and roll around under the control of a computer. For example, when there is a burning tree falling down to the viewers, the seats will timely vibrate up and down and side to side. At the back of the seat and near to a viewer’s head, there are built-in audio devices on both sides, making special sound in accordance with the sound made by audio equipment in the cinema. If it’s required to present the sound of a bee zooming by viewer’s ears, audio equipments in the cinema cannot make it.

Other special effect devices include lightning simulator, wind simulation equipment, snow simulation equipment, mist spraying equipment, antennae simulation equipment, bubble simulation equipment, smoke simulation equipment and so on. They are installed either in cinema, or placed in the front of or under the seat, which reproduces the on-screen situations with the development of film's plot, comprehensively stimulates all senses of viewers and make them completely throw themselves into the film.

Computer-controlled Systems

How to make them play their roles organically and orderly when all the elements are in their place? This calls for Computer-controlled Systems which is specially designed according to different video contents to perform its role. The core of control system is the control software. Processing engineers set orders at the precise time according to film's content to control all the switches of projection system, special effect seat and equipment, audio systems and so on, which make the whole theater systems to be an organic one and provide viewers with a full range of sensory experience.
